Tech. Description

Collared Button Front Cropped Top

A women's sleeveless cropped halter top with a notched collar, a four-button front and an open back with a V-shaped cut-out above a straight back band. Made entirely in two layers of the main fabric, so every edge is finished by bagging out.

When To Wear

  • In summer with high-waisted trousers or skirts that meet the cropped hem.
  • Under an open jacket in warm weather.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Fitted, cropped above the waist, shaped by vertical front darts.

Collar: Notched collar cut in two pieces on the fold, stitched into the neckline of the outer layer.

Sleeves: Sleeveless, with halter-cut armholes.

Front: Four buttons; buttonholes on the right front. Front darts pressed toward the centre front and edge-stitched from the right side.

Back: The halter strap and back are joined by a centre back seam; a V-shaped opening below the strap and a straight band at the lower back.

Finishing: Collar attachment seam, front edges, lower edges, back neckline and strap edges edge-stitched from the right side.

Lining: Self-lined: two front pieces and one back piece are cut from the main fabric as the inner layer.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Joining the outer and inner layers along the front and lower edges, then closing the strap and back edges by pulling them through the opening at the collar seam; a turned and edge-stitched collar; buttonholes.

Fabric Recommendations

Natural or blended fabrics; the sample is made in crepe.

Additional Supplies

  • Fusible interfacing (upper collar, front edges)
  • 4 buttons

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric (the top is made of two layers; 2 Front pieces and 1 Back piece are the inner layer):
  • Front – 4 pieces
  • Back – 2 pieces on fold
  • Collar – 2 pieces on fold
  • From fusible interfacing: the upper Collar and the front edges.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Fuse fusible interfacing to the upper collar and front edges.
  2. Stitch the darts on the front panels. Press the dart depths towards the center front, and topstitch along the edge from the right side.
  3. Stitch the side seams. Stitch the center back seam of the halter strap (and back). Press seam allowances open.
  4. Collar: Place collar pieces right sides together, stitch along the outer contour. Trim seam allowances. Turn the collar right side out, topstitch the edges along the edge. Baste the open edges of the collar to the seam allowances at a distance of 1 mm from the marking line. Stitch the collar into the neckline of the outer top from the right side, aligning the notches.
  5. Connect the inner and outer parts of the top: place the inner and outer pieces right sides together, stitch along the front edges and bottom edges, the stitching line starts and ends 5 cm short of the neckline on the front edges. Trim seam allowances, clip corners. Turn the top right side out, baste the edges. Pin the open edges of the strap and then the back edges; to do this, pull the back edges to the right side through the open section on the collar attachment seam. Stitch the edges in one go. Baste the edges of the strap and the back neckline. Fold under the seam allowances on the inner layer of the strap and baste to the collar attachment seam. Topstitch the collar attachment seam, front edges, bottom edges, back neckline edges, and strap edges along the edge from the right side.
  6. Make buttonholes along the right front edge; sew the buttons onto the left front edge.
