Tech. Description

A-Line Maxi Skirt with Fringe

A long women's A-line skirt without a waistband, with front and back darts, a concealed zip in the centre back seam and a frayed fringe strip stitched under the hem. Lined.

When To Wear

  • In summer in linen, with T-shirts, shirts and sandals.
  • With a tucked-in blouse or a short knit top for daytime outings.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: A-line, flaring gradually from the hips.

Length: Long, maxi length.

Waist: No waistband; the top edge is finished with the lining, which is understitched to the seam allowances. Two darts on the front and two on the back.

Closure: Concealed zip in the centre back seam, set so the teeth are not visible.

Skirt: Front cut on the fold, back in two pieces with a centre back seam.

Finishing: The skirt hem is trimmed, overlocked and topstitched onto a separate cross-grain strip that overlaps it by 1.5 cm on the inside; the strip is then frayed into fringe.

Lining: Full lining cut from the front and back skirt pieces, turned under and sewn to the zip tapes, with a narrow hem.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Darts, a concealed zip, a lining attached at the top edge and a fringe made by fraying a fabric strip.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Stitch the center back seam below the zipper opening mark. Press seam allowances open. Press seam allowances along the edges of the zipper opening to the wrong side.
  2. Pin the zipper so that the teeth start at the marked line of the upper edge of the skirt. Stitch the zipper so that the teeth are not visible.
  3. Stitch the darts on the front skirt and back skirts, and press the darts towards the center.
  4. Stitch the side seams.
  5. Trim the seam allowance along the lower edge of the skirt and finish the lower edge with an overlock or zigzag stitch. On the fringe stripe, finish one long edge and, at a distance of 1.5 cm from it, mark with basting stitches along the cross-grain line for aligning the lower edge of the skirt. Place the fringe stripe under the lower edge of the skirt, aligning it with the marked basting line on the fringe stripe, and pin. Topstitch the lower edge of the skirt onto the fringe stripe, stitching along the upper edge of the overlock or zigzag stitch. Fray the fringe stripe to make the fringe.
  6. On the lining pieces, stitch the darts and seams. Fold the lining with the skirt right sides together and baste to the upper edge of the skirt. Turn the lining up and topstitch to the seam allowances close to the seam. Turn the lining to the wrong side, fold under, and sew to the zipper tapes. Create a narrow hem along the bottom of the lining.
