Tech. Description

Gathered Neckline Top

A loose hip-length women's top with a wide neckline gathered on a drawstring, a short faced slit at the centre front and three-quarter sleeves finished with gathered ruffles.

When To Wear

  • In summer and on holiday, with jeans, shorts or a full skirt.
  • The neckline can be pulled in close to the neck or loosened and worn wider.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Loose and straight, no darts; front and back each cut in one piece on the fold.

Length: Hip length, straight hem topstitched 1.5 cm from the edge.

Neckline: Wide neckline with its edge finished by a dense, narrow zigzag. A casing strip is topstitched to the inside along the marking, below the edge, so the edge forms a small frill when the drawstring is pulled. Ties 0.5 cm wide run through the casing and come out at the front slit.

Front: Short slit at the centre front, faced; the facing is turned to the inside, folded to 0.75 cm and the slit is topstitched along its edges.

Sleeves: Three-quarter length. A ruffle is gathered along its upper edge to the width of the sleeve and stitched to the lower edge; the ruffle hem is finished with a dense zigzag along the fold and the excess allowance is trimmed away close to the stitching.

Finishing: Armhole allowances serged together and pressed towards the sleeve at the underarm.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. No closures, collar or fitting darts. The steps that need care are the faced front slit, the narrow zigzag edge finish, the casing and gathering the ruffles.

Fabric Recommendations

Light, softly draping blouse fabrics.

Additional Supplies

  • No extra notions are needed: the casing strip, ties and ruffles are cut from the main fabric.

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
  • Front – 1 piece on fold
  • Back – 1 piece on fold
  • Sleeve – 2 pieces
  • Neckline Facing (casing strip) – 1 piece on fold
  • Neckline Facing (tie) – 4 pieces
  • Sleeve Facing (sleeve ruffle) – 2 pieces
  • Slit Facing – 1 piece

Sewing Instructions

  1. Place the Slit Facing on the Front, right sides together, pin along the drawn slit line, and stitch along the three sides of the marking, close to it.
  2. Cut the facing and front between the stitches.
  3. Turn the facing to the wrong side, press the slit edges.
  4. Fold the facing to a width of 0.75 cm and baste.
  5. Topstitch the front along the slit edges.
  6. Sew the side seams and sleeve seams.
  7. Stitch the short edges of each sleeve ruffle (Sleeve Facing).
  8. Finish the lower edges of the ruffles with a dense, narrow zigzag stitch. Press the seam allowance to the wrong side. From the right side of the ruffle, stitch a dense, fine zigzag along the fold. From the wrong side, carefully trim the excess seam allowance close to the stitching.
  9. Gather each ruffle along the upper edge to match the length of the sleeve's lower edge.
  10. Stitch the ruffles to the lower edges of the sleeves.
  11. Set the sleeves into the armholes (side seams and sleeve seams already sewn). Serge the armhole seam allowances together and press them towards the sleeve in the lower part of the armhole.
  12. Serge the neckline edge with a dense, narrow zigzag stitch. Press the seam allowance to the wrong side. From the right side, stitch a dense, fine zigzag stitch along the fold. From the wrong side of the neckline, carefully trim the excess seam allowance close to the stitching.
  13. On the casing strip (Neckline Facing), press the seam allowances along the long and short edges to the wrong side.
  14. Pin the casing strip to the wrong side of the top along the marking, aligning its ends with the edges of the front slit.
  15. Topstitch the casing strip along the marking.
  16. Sew the tie pieces into ties 0.5 cm wide, turn them right side out and thread them through the neckline casing.
  17. Turn under the hem seam allowance and topstitch at a distance of 1.5 cm.
