Tech. Description

Raglan Sleeve Paneled Knit Top

A women's fitted long-sleeved top for low-stretch knit fabric, with raglan sleeves, princess seams on the front and back, and a centre back seam. The side panels, neckline band and cuffs are cut from a second fabric, so the top can be made in two related or contrasting colours.

When To Wear

  • As an everyday top in autumn and spring, with jeans, trousers or skirts.
  • On its own or under a jacket or cardigan.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Fitted, shaped by princess seams running from the raglan seams to the hem on the front and back.

Length: Hip length, straight hem.

Neckline: Round, finished with a band made of two facings joined into rings and stitched together.

Sleeves: Long raglan sleeves with folded cuffs; the sleeve seam is stitched in one pass with the side seam.

Front: Centre front panel cut on the fold, with two side panels.

Back: Two centre back panels joined by a centre back seam, plus two side panels. If the head does not pass through the neckline, the centre back seam is left open 5–6 cm below the neckline and closed with a thread loop and a button.

Finishing: 2 cm hem topstitched with a twin needle or on a coverstitch machine to keep it elastic.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Straight-stitch seams on low-stretch knit, princess seams, a neckline band and folded cuffs; the only extra skill is twin-needle or coverstitch hemming.

Fabric Recommendations

Low-stretch knit fabrics in natural or blended fibres, in two related or contrasting colours.

Additional Supplies

  • 1 button (only if a back neck opening is needed)

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, they include seam allowances. If the contour is single, the patterns do not include seam allowances. Seam allowances: Hem allowance – 2.0 cm. Other allowances – 0.7 cm. Attention! First, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90cm to 150cm) to determine how much material you will need (don't forget to account for paired and symmetrical pieces). When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match!

  • From main fabric 1:
    • Center back - 2 pieces
    • Center front – 1 piece on fold
    • Sleeve - 2 pieces
  • From main fabric 2:
    • Side back - 2 pieces
    • Side front – 2 pieces
    • Facing — 2 pieces
    • Cuff – 2 pieces

Note: Knit fabric pieces in this model are stitched on a straight stitch machine. The hem allowance is topstitched with a twin needle or on a coverstitch machine to maintain elasticity.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Stitch the princess seams of the back and front, press allowances towards the center and overlock.
  2. Stitch the center back seam, press allowances to the left side and overlock.
  3. Attach the sleeve to the back, press allowances towards the sleeve and overlock. Attach the sleeve to the front, press allowances towards the sleeve and overlock.
  4. Stitch the side seam simultaneously with the sleeve seam, press allowances and overlock.
  5. Stitch the cuff into a loop, press allowances open. Fold the cuff lengthwise in half, right side out, and attach to the bottom of the sleeve, overlock allowances.
  6. Stitch each facing into a loop, press allowances open. Place facings right sides together and stitch the neckline edge. Clip allowances at the curve, turn the piece right side out, straighten, press. Attach the facing to the neckline, press allowances and overlock.
  7. Overlock the hem allowance of the garment, press to the wrong side and topstitch. Attention! Before finishing the upper edge of the garment with the facing, make sure the head passes through the neckline opening. Otherwise, it is recommended to create a closure: stitch the center back seam, stopping 5 – 6 cm before the neckline edge; create a loop; stitch the neckline edge and the ends of the facing, inserting the loop; attach the facing to the upper edge; sew on a button.
