Tech. Description

Asymmetric Collar Fit-and-Flare Dress

This elegant dress pattern features a sophisticated fit-and-flare silhouette, highlighted by a unique asymmetric two-part collar and an off-center buttoned front placket.

When To Wear

This versatile dress is perfect for creating a polished and sophisticated look, suitable for:

  • Professional Settings: Ideal for office wear, business meetings, or professional gatherings.
  • Semi-Formal Events: An excellent choice for luncheons, afternoon teas, or smart-casual occasions.
  • Everyday Elegance: Elevate your daily wardrobe with its refined design and comfortable fit.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: a flattering fit-and-flare design, closely fitted through the bodice and waist, then gracefully flaring into an a-line skirt.

Neckline & Collar: Features a distinctive asymmetric flat collar made of two parts (left and right collar) with rounded ends, meeting at the top of the off-center front placket.

Closure: a short, off-center buttoned placket on the upper front, plus a concealed zipper in the center back seam.

Sleeves: Elegant three-quarter length set-in sleeves, offering coverage and a refined line.

Front: Shaping is achieved through curved princess seams that run from the armhole down to the hem, enhancing the silhouette.

Back: Defined by a center back seam and curved princess seams extending from the armhole to the hem, ensuring a tailored fit.

Hem: The skirt finishes at knee-length, with a gentle flare.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. This pattern requires experience with collar construction, setting sleeves, installing a hidden zipper, and creating buttonholes.

Fabric Recommendations

Choose well-draping dress fabrics that offer both structure and graceful movement:

  • Natural fiber fabrics (e.g., wool crepe, cotton sateen, linen blends)
  • Blended fiber fabrics (e.g., wool/polyester blends, viscose blends, stretch twill)

Additional Supplies

  • Hidden zipper
  • Fusible interfacing
  • 5 buttons

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, they include seam allowances. If the contour is single, the patterns do not include seam allowances. Seam allowances: hem allowance for the dress bottom – 2 cm, placket allowance for the left front – 3 cm, all other seams 1 cm. Attention! First, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90 cm to 150 cm) to determine how much material you will need (do not forget to account for paired and symmetrical pieces).

  • From main fabric:

    • Side Front – 2 pieces

Sewing Instructions

When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match! Attention! Markings on the patterns are made on the right side.

  1. Interface the collars with fusible interfacing, as well as the placket allowances of the front.
  2. Finish the raw edges of the center back separately. Stitch the center back seam from the zipper mark to the bottom. Press the seam allowances open, pressing the slit for the zipper. Insert the zipper. Stitch the back princess seams. Finish the seam allowances and press them towards the center back.
  3. Finish the placket allowance of the Center Front, fold it inwards and press. Finish the placket allowance of the Left Front, fold it inwards, topstitch and press. Place the Center Front over the Left Front and stitch them together along the lower edge of the placket. Stitch the upper corners of the placket. Fold the Left Front back and topstitch along the placket edge on the Center Front.
  4. Stitch the front princess seams. Finish the seam allowances and press them towards the center.
  5. Stitch the shoulder and side seams, press the allowances towards the back and finish them.
  6. Place each pair of collar pieces (Left Collar, Right Collar) right sides together and stitch along the outer edges. Trim the seam allowances, turn the collars right side out and press. Attach the upper collars to the neckline. Fold the allowances of the lower collars inwards and topstitch into the seam of the upper collars.
  7. Stitch the sleeve seam. Finish the allowance and press it towards the back. Set the sleeves into the armholes. Finish the allowances.
  8. Finish the bottom edge of the dress and sleeves, press to the wrong side and topstitch.
  9. On the right front, make buttonholes, sew buttons onto the left front.
