Fitted Collared Dress with Flounces and Sleeves

This made-to-measure sewing pattern creates a sophisticated fitted dress, featuring a distinctive two-piece rounded collar, a curved button-trimmed front seam, and a playful flounced hem.

When To Wear

This elegant and versatile dress is suitable for a variety of occasions, offering both professionalism and refined style:

  • Professional Settings: Ideal for office wear, business meetings, or corporate events due to its polished and tailored silhouette.
  • Cocktail Parties & Social Gatherings: Its unique design and flattering fit make it perfect for semi-formal evening events and stylish get-togethers.
  • Daytime Elegance: a chic choice for luncheons, gallery visits, or any occasion where sophisticated comfort is desired.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: a tailored, fitted silhouette with a seam under the bust and curved princess seams on the lower front for a flattering profile.

Neckline & Collar: a rounded flat collar made of two parts (right and left) frames the neckline, accented with decorative buttons.

Front Detail: a curved seam on the lower front, adorned with a row of decorative buttons, sweeps down into the flounce.

Sleeves: Short cap sleeves gathered at the sleeve cap; the lower part of the armhole is finished with bias binding.

Closure: an invisible zipper at the center back, ensuring a seamless front appearance.

Hem: The dress concludes with a graceful flounced hem, adding a touch of movement and femininity.

Length: Designed to fall elegantly around the knee.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Requires experience with fitting, setting gathered sleeves, installing an invisible zipper, and precise collar construction.

Fabric Recommendations

Choose dressmaking fabrics that hold structure well for a crisp finish, or those with a slight drape for subtle fluidity:

  • Dress fabrics made from natural or blended fibers
  • A contrasting colored fabric for the collar and flounces

Additional Supplies

  • Fusible non-woven interfacing (for collar)
  • Invisible zipper
  • 9 buttons
  • Bias binding, 4 cm wide (or cut from fabric)

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, they include seam allowances. If the contour is single, the patterns do not include seam allowances. Seam allowances: all seams 1 cm; sleeve hem allowance 1.5 cm. Attention! First, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90 cm to 150 cm) to determine how much material you will need (do not forget to account for paired and symmetrical pieces).

Sewing Instructions

  1. Fuse interfacing to one Right Collar and one Left Collar piece.
  2. Stitch the darts on the Upper Back and Lower Back pieces and press them towards the center. Stitch the Upper Back to the Lower Back. Overlock the seam allowance and press it downwards. Overlock the center back edges separately. Stitch the center back seam from the zipper mark to the lower edge and press the seam allowances open. Insert the invisible zipper.
  3. Stitch the darts on the Upper Front. Press the dart depths towards the center.
  4. Stitch the princess seams of the front (Lower Center Front, Lower Left Front and Lower Right Front). Overlock the seam allowances and press them towards the center.
  5. Stitch the flounces (Front Trimming and Back Trimming) to the front and back respectively. Overlock the seam allowances and press them upwards.
  6. Stitch the side and shoulder seams. Overlock the seam allowances and press them towards the back.
  7. Place the Right Collar pieces right sides together and stitch along the outer edge; repeat with the Left Collar. Notch the seam allowances, turn the collars right side out and press. Clip the neckline seam allowance at the mark. Stitch the outer layer of the collar to the neckline. Turn under the seam allowance of the inner layer and topstitch it along the collar attachment seam.
  8. Overlock the lower edge of the Sleeve, fold it inwards and topstitch. Sew a line of loose-tension stitching along the sleeve cap and gather. Set the sleeve into the armhole. Overlock the seam allowance. Cut (if you don't have ready-made) a bias strip 4 cm wide and as long as the lower part of the armhole + 5 cm. Fold the bias strip in half lengthwise, wrong sides together, and press. Place the binding on the right side along the armhole edge and stitch. Clip the seam allowances. Turn the binding to the wrong side and topstitch along the fold onto the dress. Press the seam.
  9. Overlock the lower edge of the flounces, press it to the wrong side and topstitch. Sew on the decorative buttons.
