Tank Top with Contrast Side Panels

A women's fitted sleeveless top in knit fabric, with curved seams that divide the front into a centre panel and two side panels, and shoulder yokes joining front and back. Neck and armholes are finished with bias binding.

When To Wear

  • For sport and hot days, with leggings, shorts or jeans.
  • Under a cardigan or jacket.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Close-fitting, shaped by the curved front panel seams.

Length: Hip length.

Neckline: Round neck finished with a 4 cm bias strip folded in half and topstitched; bar tack at the yoke seam.

Sleeves: Sleeveless; armholes finished with a 4 cm folded bias strip, with a bar tack at the side seam.

Front: Centre front panel and two side panels.

Back: One piece, joined to the front by separate shoulder yokes.

Finishing: Seams sewn with a stretch or narrow zigzag stitch; hem twin-needle topstitched.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. A few pieces, bias binding on neck and armholes and a simple hem; some practice with knit fabric helps.

Fabric Recommendations

Knit fabric with medium stretch, in natural or blended fibres. The side panels and yokes can be cut in a contrasting colour.

Additional Supplies

  • None besides fabric and thread.

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
  • 1. Back – 1 piece
  • 2. Center front – 1 piece
  • 3. Side front – 2 pieces
  • 4. Yoke – 2 pieces

Tip: When sewing knit fabrics, use a special elastic stitch or a narrow zigzag stitch. When serging, trim seam allowances to 0.6 – 0.8 cm. For the hem, use a twin needle to maintain elasticity.
