Sleeveless Racerback Dress with Gathered Waist

A women's sleeveless dress above the knee, with a round front neckline, a racerback and a waist gathered by elastic stitched on the inside. Front and back are each cut in one piece on the fold, with no waist seam.

When To Wear

  • In hot weather, for the city, travel or the beach.
  • With flat sandals or trainers; the racer cut leaves the shoulder blades open.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Blouson bodice over an elastic waist, with a flared skirt below.

Length: Above the knee.

Neckline: Round neckline, finished with a 4 cm bias binding folded in half and topstitched.

Sleeves: Sleeveless; armholes finished with the same folded bias binding.

Front: Bust darts pressed downwards.

Back: Racerback cut, with narrow straps meeting between the shoulder blades.

Waist: Elastic joined into a loop and stitched between the marked lines while stretched, gathering the front and back at the waist.

Finishing: Bar tacks at the side seams at the armhole line; hem overlocked, turned and topstitched.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Two pattern pieces, darts, folded bias binding and elastic stitched directly onto the fabric.

Fabric Recommendations

Light fabrics from natural or blended fibres, chiffon.

Additional Supplies

  • Elastic, 0.7 to 1 cm wide (approximate length is marked on the front pattern piece)

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, they include seam allowances. If the contour is single, the patterns do not include seam allowances. Seam allowances: hem allowance – 1.5 cm, other seams - 1 cm. Attention! First, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90 cm to 150 cm) to determine how much material you will need. When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match!

  • From main fabric:
    • Front – 1 piece on fold
    • Back – 1 piece on fold

Sewing Instructions

  1. Stitch darts on the front. Press the dart takes downwards.
  2. Stitch the right shoulder seam. Overlock the allowance and press it towards the back.
  3. Cut a bias binding 4 cm wide and a length equal to the back neckline length plus the front neckline length + 4 cm. Fold the binding in half lengthwise and press. Place the binding on the neckline and stitch. Clip the allowances. Turn the binding to the wrong side and topstitch.
  4. Stitch the left shoulder seam. Overlock the allowance and press it towards the back.
  5. Cut a bias binding 4 cm wide and a length equal to the armhole length + 4 cm. Fold the binding in half lengthwise and press. Place the binding on the armhole and stitch. Clip the allowances. Turn the binding to the wrong side and topstitch.
  6. Stitch the side seams. Overlock the allowances and press them towards the back. Place bar tacks on the side seams at the armhole line.
  7. Stitch the elastic into a loop. Topstitch the elastic between the marked lines, stretching the elastic.
  8. Overlock the hem of the dress, fold the edges inwards and topstitch.
