Tech. Description

Sleeveless Pleated Wrap Top

A women's sleeveless top with a mock-wrap front: the right front overlaps the left and both are stitched into the side seam. A folded collar band runs from the back neck down the wrap edges, and pleats are stitched down at the shoulders.

When To Wear

  • In summer, with skirts, shorts or trousers.
  • Under a jacket or cardigan for the office.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Semi-fitted, straight.

Length: Hip length.

Collar: Folded band collar in two halves joined at the centre back. It stands at the back neck and follows the wrap edges of the front down to the side seam, where it is folded in half and caught into the seam.

Front: Two fronts, right over left, basted together along the lower and side edges; there is no opening and no fastening. Pleats at each shoulder are stitched down for 2–3 cm, depths turned towards the neckline.

Sleeves: Sleeveless; armholes finished with a 4 cm folded bias strip turned to the inside and topstitched.

Back: One piece cut on the fold.

Finishing: Collar seam topstitched; hem turned up twice by 1 cm and topstitched.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Three pattern pieces and no fastenings; care is needed with the long folded collar and the bias-bound armholes.

Fabric Recommendations

Soft blouse fabrics from natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • Bias binding 4 cm wide for the armholes (or cut from the main fabric)

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, they include seam allowances. If the contour is single, the patterns do not include seam allowances. Seam allowances: all seams 1 cm. Hem allowance – 2 cm. Attention! First of all, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90cm to 150cm) to determine how much material you will need (do not forget to account for paired and symmetrical pieces). When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match!

  • From main fabric:
    • Back – 1 piece on fold
    • Front – 2 pieces
    • Collar – 2 pieces

Sewing Instructions

  1. Fold and stitch down the pleats for 2–3 cm along the shoulder edges of each Front (depths directed towards the neckline).
  2. Place the two Collar pieces right sides together and stitch the center back seam of the collar, press seam allowances open. Press the collar lengthwise in half, right side out.
  3. Stitch the shoulder seams, press seam allowances towards the back and serge.
  4. Set the collar into the neckline of the back and front, press seam allowances towards the main piece, serge and topstitch. At the side edge, keep the collar folded in half and baste it to the side edge. Overlap the right Front over the left and baste them together along the lower and side edges.
  5. Cut (if not ready-made) a bias binding 4 cm wide and a length equal to the armhole length + 4cm. Fold the bias binding lengthwise in half, right side out, and press. Place the binding with the armhole edge right sides together and stitch. Clip seam allowances. Fold the binding to the wrong side and topstitch along the fold onto the main piece. Press the seam.
  6. Stitch the side seams, press seam allowances towards the back and serge.
  7. Press the bottom edge of the garment to the wrong side twice by 1 cm and topstitch.
