Tech. Description

Girls Cap Sleeve High-Low Ruffled Dress

Introducing a girls' sewing pattern for an enchanting high-low dress featuring delicate cap sleeves, a fitted bodice, and a voluminous layered ruffled skirt.

When To Wear

This charming dress is perfect for special occasions, making it an ideal choice for:

  • Celebrations & Parties: Ideal for birthdays, holidays, or any festive gathering.
  • Weddings & Formal Events: a beautiful option for flower girls or other formal ceremonies.
  • Photoshoots & Pageants: Creates a whimsical and elegant look for memorable pictures or performances.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Fitted bodice with a dramatically full, layered high-low skirt.

Neckline: Classic round neckline for a gentle and comfortable fit.

Sleeves: Short, delicate cap sleeves that softly frame the shoulders.

Back: Features a clean center back seam and a charming tie-back satin ribbon for waist definition.

Hem: a distinctive high-low hemline, with the skirt shorter in the front and sweeping longer in the back, accented by multiple ruffled layers.

Closure: Concealed zipper closure at the center back ensures a seamless finish.

Waist: Fitted bodice gently transitions to a gathered skirt at the natural waistline.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Requires skills in gathering, working with delicate fabrics, inserting a concealed zipper, and finishing multiple skirt layers.

Fabric Recommendations

Choose elegant dress fabrics with good drape for the main dress, and a light, airy fabric for the ruffled skirt layers:

  • Dense silk dress fabrics (natural or blended fibers like silk, viscose, polyester)
  • Chiffon (for ruffled skirt layers)
  • Organza (for ruffled skirt layers)

Additional Supplies

  • Concealed zipper
  • Elastic thread
  • Bias tape
  • Satin ribbon (for tie-back waist)

Cutter's Must

  • From silk:
    • Back - 2 pieces
    • Front - 1 piece
    • Sleeve – 4 pieces
    • Front skirt half – 1 piece on fold
    • Back skirt half – 2 pieces
  • From chiffon:
    • Front skirt half – 1 piece on fold
    • Back skirt half – 2 pieces
    • Upper front skirt half – 1 piece on fold
    • Upper back skirt half – 2 pieces

Sewing Instructions

  1. Fold sleeve pieces in pairs, right sides together, and stitch along the bottom edge. Press the seam. Open the pieces. Along the seam, stitch with elastic thread, placing the elastic on the lining side.
  2. Attach the sleeves to the back and front. Press the seam towards the sleeve. Stitch the side seams, overlock the seams, and press them towards the back. Finish the armhole with bias binding.
  3. On the skirt pieces, stitch the side seams. Overlock the seams and press them towards the back. Overlock the center back seam separately and stitch from the bottom to the notch. On the chiffon pieces, topstitch the seam allowances along the slit.
  4. Assemble the skirt pieces in the following order: bottom layer — silk, then the chiffon underskirt, and then the chiffon upper skirt. Pin the skirt pieces at the waistline and then treat as a single-layer piece. Along the waistline on the skirt, stitch with loosely tensioned stitches and gather. Attach the skirt to the bodice. Overlock the seam and press upwards.
  5. Insert the zipper into the center seam, not catching the chiffon pieces. Fold the bias binding in half lengthwise, right side out, and press. Place the bias binding on the right side with the neckline edge and stitch. Clip the seam. Fold the bias binding to the wrong side and topstitch along the fold. Turn the ends of the bias binding inwards and secure.
  6. Finish the hem of the skirts with a rolled hem, gently stretching the edge.
  7. Turn under the edges of the satin ribbon twice by 0.7 cm and topstitch. Cut the ribbon into 2 parts and topstitch at the level of the side seam. Decorate the front of the dress with silk or organza flowers.
