Tech. Description

Cascade-Flounce Halter Blouse

Introducing a chic women's blouse pattern featuring a halter neckband, a cascading spiral flounce down the center front, a shirred lowered waist, and a flared peplum hem.

When To Wear

This stylish blouse is perfect for adding an elegant touch to a range of occasions, making it suitable for:

  • Casual Chic Outings: Pair with jeans or tailored shorts for an elevated everyday look.
  • Daytime Events: Ideal for brunches, garden parties, or social gatherings.
  • Evening Elegance: Dress up with smart trousers or a skirt for semi-formal dinners or events.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Relaxed bloused top with bust darts, joined at a lowered waist to a shirred lower part that flares into a peplum.

Neckline: Halter style: the front and the straps are attached to a doubled, interfaced neckband that fastens at the back of the neck.

Front: Features a dramatic spiral flounce ("coquille"), edged with bias binding and set into the center front seam, cascading from the neckline almost to the waist.

Waist: The lower part is shirred with rows of elastic thread, creating a fitted, textured band below the bloused top.

Back: Low back with an elasticated upper edge and two straps running up to the neckband.

Hem: The peplum hem is finished with a delicate rolled hem.

Closure: Two buttons with buttonholes on the neckband at the back of the neck.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Requires skills in working with delicate fabrics, applying bias binding, setting a spiral flounce, and shirring with elastic thread.

Fabric Recommendations

Choose lightweight and translucent fabrics with good drape to best showcase the flounce and peplum:

  • Light sheer fabrics made from natural or blended fibers (e.g., chiffon, georgette, voile)

Additional Supplies

  • Fusible interfacing
  • Bias binding
  • 2 buttons
  • Elastic
  • Elastic thread

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
  • Back – 1 piece
  • Front – 2 pieces
  • Placket – 2 pieces
  • Strap – 2 pieces
  • Coquille – 1 piece
  • Lower Part – 2 pieces
  • From fusible interfacing:
  • Placket – 1 piece

Sewing Instructions

  1. Fuse interfacing to the outer Placket (neckband).
  2. Fold each Strap in half lengthwise, right sides together, and stitch along the long edge. Turn the strap right side out and press.
  3. Stitch the dart on each Front. Press the dart upwards.
  4. Cut the Coquille in a spiral. Bind the outer edge of the flounce with bias binding. Measure the length of the flounce along its open edge: it should equal the length of the center front edge minus 1 cm.
  5. Place the Front pieces right sides together, insert the flounce between them from the neckline to 1 cm above the lower edge, align the edges, and stitch the center front seam. Serge the seam and press.
  6. Stitch the side seams. Serge the seams and press towards the back. Serge the front armhole edges and the upper edge of the Back. Press the edges to the wrong side. On the Back, between the center notches, place elastic under the turned edge, stretching it slightly. Topstitch the edge in place. Attach the Straps to the Back, with the strap fold facing the center back.
  7. Place the two Placket pieces together and stitch along the inner edge, stitching the short ends at the same time. Trim the seam allowances. Turn right side out and press. Press the lower edges inwards. Following the markings, attach the Straps and the upper edge of the Fronts to the inner placket. Topstitch the outer placket to the inner placket close to the edge. Press.
  8. Stitch the side seams of the Lower Part pieces. Serge the seams and press towards the back. Stitch rows of elastic thread along the markings. Attach the Lower Part to the upper part. Serge the seam and press upwards.
  9. Finish the hem of the blouse with a rolled hem.
  10. Make buttonholes on the placket and sew on the buttons.
