Tech. Description

One-Shoulder Cross Front Band Top

A women's sleeveless one-shoulder top for knit fabric. The diagonal top edge of the front and back is finished with one continuous folded band that runs over a single shoulder and crosses near it.

When To Wear

  • In summer, with jeans, shorts, trousers or a skirt.
  • For evenings out, worn with fitted trousers or a skirt.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Close-fitting, following the body to the hips.

Length: Hip length, with a straight hem.

Neckline: Asymmetric top edge that runs diagonally across the front and back, from one underarm up over the opposite shoulder. It is bound with a band cut as one piece, sewn into a loop and folded in half lengthwise. The outer layer of the band is stitched to the front and back with matched notches, and the inner layer is turned under and topstitched in the ditch.

Sleeves: Sleeveless.

Back: One piece with no centre back seam, joined to the front only at the side seams.

Finishing: Side seams are pressed towards the back. Hem and armholes are turned under and topstitched; a twin needle keeps the hems stretchy.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Three pieces and two side seams. The one step that needs care is attaching the folded band along the diagonal top edge and stitching it in the ditch.

Fabric Recommendations

Knit fabric with medium or high stretch, made from natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • A twin needle for topstitching the hems

Cutting Plan

From main fabric:

  • Back – 1 piece
  • Front – 1 piece
  • Placket – 1 piece

Tip: Pattern pieces from knit fabrics are stitched with a special elastic or narrow zigzag stitch. When serging, trim seam allowances to 0.6 – 0.8 cm. Hem allowance is topstitched with a twin needle to maintain elasticity.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Stitch side seams of back and front. Serge seams and press towards the back.
  2. Serge the bottom edge of the garment and the armhole edge. Fold to the wrong side, press, and topstitch.
  3. Stitch the placket into a loop. Fold the placket in half lengthwise, right side out, and press.
  4. Attach the placket with its outer side to the back and front, aligning notches. Fold the seam allowances of the inner side of the placket inwards and topstitch in the ditch.
