Tech. Description

Ruffled Asymmetrical Flounce Maxi Dress

A women's long fitted dress on narrow bias-binding straps, with a ruffle along one side of the front neckline running over the shoulder to the back, and a flounce skirt attached along a diagonal seam: two overlapping front flounces and one back flounce form an uneven, high-low hem.

When To Wear

  • Summer evenings, holidays and garden parties.
  • Warm-weather weddings and celebrations, with sandals or heeled shoes.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Fitted through the bodice and hips by bust and waist darts, flaring out below the diagonal flounce seam.

Length: Long; the hem is shorter at the front where the flounces overlap and longest at the back. Hem overlocked, turned up and topstitched 0.5 cm from the edge.

Neckline: Scoop neckline bound with bias binding folded in half; the binding continues to form narrow straps stitched to the back. Armholes are bound in the same way.

Front: One front piece with bust darts and waist darts. A ruffle made of four joined pieces, its outer and side edges finished with a rolled hem, is basted to one side of the neckline and caught in the binding; its length is adjusted at a fitting.

Skirt: Right and left front flounces with turned and topstitched centre edges, overlapped at the notches and joined to the front along a diagonal seam; a single back flounce continues the diagonal around the back.

Back: Right and left backs with waist darts and a centre back seam.

Closure: Invisible zip, 25 cm, in the centre back seam.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Attaching flounces along a long diagonal seam, rolled-hem ruffle edges, a continuous bias binding that forms the straps, an invisible zip and fitting the ruffle and strap length on the body.

Fabric Recommendations

Fabrics made from natural or blended fibres.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Mark and stitch the bust darts. Press the bust darts downwards.
  2. Mark and stitch the waist darts on the Front and backs. Press the darts on the Front towards the center front, and on the backs towards the center back.
  3. Overlock the center edges of the Right Front Flounce and Left Front Flounce. Press the overlocked edges to the wrong side and topstitch 0.5 cm from the edge. Overlap the flounces according to the notches and baste the upper edges of the flounces together between the notches.
  4. Attach the front flounces to the Front, overlock the seam and press it towards the Front.
  5. Overlock the center back edges of the Right Back and Left Back. Stitch the center back seam up to the zipper notch. Press the center back seam open, also pressing the zipper allowances.
  6. Attach the Back Flounce to the backs, overlock the seam and press it towards the back.
  7. Stitch the side seams of the front and back. Overlock the side seams and press them towards the back.
  8. Stitch the Flounce (neckline ruffle) pieces together at the short side edges, overlock the seams and press. Finish the outer and side edges of the ruffle with a rolled hem.
  9. Try on the dress, adjust the length of the ruffle and measure the strap length. Baste the ruffle to the neckline edge of the front and back as shown in the technical drawing.
  10. Fold the bias binding in half and press. Bind the armhole edges of the front and back with bias binding. Then bind the back neckline edge, the inner edge of the ruffle and the front neckline edge. Continue the bias binding to form the strap: stitch it closed and attach it to the back.
  11. Insert the zipper.
  12. Overlock the lower edges of the Back Flounce and front flounces, press to the wrong side and topstitch 0.5 cm from the edge.
