Tech. Description

Maxi Asymmetrical Denim Faux Wrap Skirt with Frayed Hem

A women's straight maxi skirt with a faux-wrap front: an asymmetrical right front with stitched pleats is topstitched over the left front. Faced waist, zip in the centre back seam and a fringed hem and front edge.

When To Wear

  • In spring and autumn with T-shirts, shirts and fitted knitwear tucked in at the waist.
  • With ankle boots or flat shoes, so the opening at the front hem stays visible.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Narrow, straight column shaped with darts on the front and back.

Length: Maxi.

Front: Separate right and left front panels. The right front has stitched-down pleats running diagonally from the side waist, and its asymmetrical edge is topstitched onto the left front, leaving an opening towards the hem. The two fronts are held at the waist with a 2 cm bar tack.

Closure: Zip in the centre back seam.

Back: Two back panels with darts and a centre back seam.

Waist: No waistband; the waist is finished with interfaced facings, understitched 0.2 cm from the seam.

Finishing: No hem allowance: the hem and the front edge are left as a fringe, made by hand or with a fringed trim.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Darts, stitched pleats, a zip and a waist facing; the asymmetrical overlap is simply topstitched in place.

Fabric Recommendations

Denim.

Additional Supplies

  • Zip
  • Fusible interfacing (front and back facings)

Sewing Instructions

  1. Fuse fusible interfacing to: facings for front and back skirt halves.
  2. Mark and stitch darts on the front and back skirt halves. Press darts on the back skirt half towards the center of the back skirt half, and darts on the front skirt half towards the center of the front skirt half.
  3. Mark and stitch pleats on the right front skirt half.
  4. Overlock the center edge of the skirt. Stitch the center seam of the skirt, leaving an opening for the zipper.
  5. Overlock the side edges of the front and back skirt halves. Stitch the side seams of the skirt and press open.
  6. Stitch the side edges of the facings and press seams open. Overlock the outer edge of the facings.
  7. Insert the zipper. Face the corners of the front and back skirt halves, and the upper edge of the front and back skirt halves with the facing. Topstitch the facing allowance onto the facing at a distance of 0.2 cm from the facing seam.
  8. Topstitch the asymmetrical edge of the right front skirt half onto the left front skirt half. Secure the right and left front skirt halves with a 2cm bar tack into the facing seam at the waist edge.
  9. If desired, the hem of the garment and the front edge of the front skirt half can be finished with decorative fringe trim strip or made by hand.
