Tech. Description

Ruffled Front Blouse

A women's fitted blouse with a shirt collar on a stand, a five-button front placket edged on both sides with gathered flounces, and long sleeves shirred with hat elastic.

When To Wear

  • For the office with trousers, pencil skirts or under a jacket.
  • For dinners and family occasions with a plain skirt or trousers.
  • In spring and summer in lightweight linen.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Fitted, shaped with waist darts on the fronts and back.

Length: Hip length, straight hem.

Collar: Pointed shirt collar on a separate stand; the collar is topstitched along the edge.

Front: A separate placket on each front, topstitched 0.2 cm from the edge. A gathered flounce with a rolled-hem edge is caught under each placket and runs from the neckline to just above the hem.

Closure: Five buttons and buttonholes on the placket.

Sleeves: Long, set-in, with no cuff. The lower part of the sleeve is shirred with rows of hat elastic stitched on with a zigzag, so the sleeve end forms a frill.

Back: One piece with waist darts.

Finishing: 3 cm hem on the blouse and 2 cm on the sleeves, topstitched; shoulder and side seams overlocked and pressed towards the back.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Rolled-hem flounces gathered and set under the placket, a collar on a stand, shirring with hat elastic, set-in sleeves with an eased cap.

Fabric Recommendations

Fine linen or blended fabrics.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Fuse interfacing to the Plackets, the upper Collar and the Stand Collar.
  2. Mark and stitch the waist darts on the fronts and back. Press the front darts towards the centre front and the back darts towards the centre back.
  3. Press the Placket in half lengthwise, wrong sides together. Press under the outer edge of the placket by 0.7 cm, place the unpressed edge of the placket on the wrong side of the front and stitch.
  4. Finish the outer edge and the short lower edge of the Flounce with a rolled hem. Along the inner edge of the flounce, 0.5 cm from the edge, run a line of loose gathering stitches. Gather the edge to the required length, distributing the gathers evenly along the entire length.
  5. Baste the flounce under the pressed edge of the placket so that the short lower edge of the flounce ends above the hem allowance. Topstitch the placket onto the blouse 0.2 cm from its pressed edge. Remove the basting. Stitch the short upper edge of the flounce to the front neckline edge 0.5 cm from the edge.
  6. Stitch the shoulder and side seams of the blouse. Overlock the side and shoulder seams. Press the shoulder and side seams towards the back.
  7. Stitch the under collar and upper Collar together around the edge and turn the collar right side out.
  8. Stitch the Stand Collar pieces together with the collar sandwiched between them.
  9. Stitch the inner stand with the collar into the neckline, catching the short upper edge of the flounce; turn under the open edge of the outer stand and topstitch it along the attachment seam. Topstitch around the collar.
  10. Mark the lines for the hat elastic on the sleeve. Stitch the hat elastic along the lines with a zigzag stitch. Stitch the sleeve seams.
  11. Set in the sleeves, easing the sleeve cap.
  12. Work buttonholes on the right front and sew buttons on the left front.
  13. Overlock, turn up and topstitch the hem of the blouse and the sleeve hems.
