Tech. Description

Flounced Handkerchief Hem Skirt

A women's skirt with a fitted upper part shaped by darts and a deep flounce sewn to its lower edge, cut in four panels that fall into points of different lengths. Faced waist, zipper at the centre back, for thin viscose or silk.

When To Wear

  • In summer with fitted tops, camisoles and light blouses.
  • For parties and holidays, with sandals or heeled shoes.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Fitted over the hips to the upper thigh, then loose and fluid through the flounce.

Length: Uneven: the points of the flounce reach below the knee, longest at the sides.

Skirt: Front in one piece, back in two halves with a centre back seam; darts at front and back pressed towards the centre.

Waist: No waistband; interfaced front and back facings, understitched 0.2 cm from the seam, side edges hand-stitched at the zipper.

Closure: Zipper in the centre back seam.

Back: The centre back seam runs through both the skirt and the flounce.

Finishing: The flounce seam is overlocked and pressed towards the skirt; the flounce hem is overlocked while stretching the edge, so it ripples.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Darts, a zipper and facing in a slippery fabric, attaching a long flounce evenly, and a stretched overlock hem.

Fabric Recommendations

Thin viscose or silk fabrics.

  2. Mark and stitch darts on the front and back panels. Press darts on the back towards the center of the back, and darts on the front towards the center of the front.
  3. Overlock the side edges of the front and back panels. Stitch the side seams of the skirt and press open.
  4. Stitch the side edges of the facings and press seams open. Overlock the outer edge of the facings.
  5. Stitch the side edges of the flounces, leaving the center edge of the flounce free. Overlock seams and press.
