Tech. Description

Maxi Skirt with Asymmetrical Panel

A maxi-length women's skirt on a straight waistband, with a curved diagonal seam on the front and back that joins a flared lower part cut from a contrasting print fabric. Darts at the waist and a zip in the left side seam.

When To Wear

  • In spring and summer with a plain fitted top or a shirt tucked into the waistband.
  • For daytime celebrations and evening dinners, in satin with a printed lower part.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Close to the hips, flaring below the diagonal seam into a wide hem.

Length: Maxi.

Skirt: One front and one back panel in the main fabric, each with two waist darts. A curved seam runs diagonally across the front and back, rising towards one side; below it, two lower pieces in the contrast fabric add flare.

Waist: Straight interfaced waistband, folded in half, with an extension for the closure and a buttonhole.

Closure: Zip in the left side seam, inserted so the teeth are hidden.

Finishing: Hem overlocked and topstitched.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Joining a long curved seam between two fabrics, a side zip and a waistband with an extension and buttonhole.

Fabric Recommendations

Satin fabrics from natural or blended fibres; a printed companion fabric for the lower part of the skirt.

Additional Supplies

  • Fusible interfacing (waistband)
  • 1 zip
  • 1 button (waistband)

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
    1. Front skirt half - 1 piece
    2. Back skirt half - 1 piece
    3. Waistband – 1 piece
  • From contrast fabric:
    1. Lower skirt – 2 pieces
  • From fusible interfacing: reinforce waistband with interfacing.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Reinforce the waistband with fusible interfacing (Iron-on interfacings are pressed onto the wrong side of the piece with a hot iron). Stitch darts on the front skirt half and back skirt half, press them towards the center.
  2. Attach the lower skirt parts to the front skirt half and back skirt half. Overlock and press the seam allowances.
  3. Sew the side seams. Insert the zipper into the left side seam so that the teeth are not visible.
  4. Fold the waistband in half lengthwise and neatly stitch the ends and the extension for the closure. Attach the outer half of the waistband to the upper edge of the skirt, fold under the inner half and sew it over the attachment seam. Make a buttonhole.
  5. Overlock and topstitch the hem of the skirt.
