Tech. Description

Side Stripe Straight Leg Trousers

Full-length women's straight-leg trousers with a contrast stripe set into each side seam, a faced waist without a waistband and a concealed zip at the centre back.

When To Wear

  • For evening events and celebrations, with the stripes cut in velvet or satin against a silk base.
  • With a plain blouse or a fitted top tucked in, so the faced waist stays visible.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Straight legs falling from the hip to a full-length hem.

Waist: No waistband; the top edge is finished with a front facing and two back facings, interfaced and understitched 0.2 cm from the seam. Darts on the front and back shape the waist.

Legs: A separate stripe piece is sewn to the side edge of each front and then joined to the back, so the stripe runs down the outer leg from waist to hem.

Closure: Concealed zip in the centre back seam, set under the folded edges so the teeth are hidden.

Back: Centre back seam with a double row of stitching along the seat seam.

Finishing: Overlocked seams; inseams pressed open; 3 cm hem turned up and stitched.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Inserting a stripe panel at the side seams, a concealed centre back zip and a faced waist finished by hand at the zip.

Fabric Recommendations

Silk fabric for the trousers; velvet or satin for the side stripes.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Fuse the front and back facings with fusible interfacing.
  2. Stitch the darts on the front and back pant halves and press them towards the center of each half.
  3. Attach the stripe to the side edge of the front. Overlock the stripe attachment seam and press it towards the front. Stitch the side edge of the stripe and the side edge of the back. Overlock the side seam of the stripe and the back. Press the side seam towards the back. Overlock the bottom of the pants. Overlock, stitch, and press open the inseams. Overlock the front and center edges. Stitch the front edge and center edge up to the notch for the zipper on the back. Stitch a second line along the seat seam next to the stitching line of the front and center seam.
  4. Press the seam allowances for the zipper along the edges to the wrong side. Place the zipper under the opening so that the teeth are not visible, and stitch it.
  5. Stitch the side edges of the front and back facings. Overlock the bottom edge of the facings. Place the stitched facings face to face with the pants and finish the upper edges of the pants. Topstitch the seams onto the facing at a distance of 0.2 cm from the finishing seam. Fold the seam allowances of the center edges of the facings and hand stitch them.
  6. Press the hem allowance to the wrong side and stitch it.
