Tech. Description

Asymmetric Paneled Skirt

A women's skirt with front and back each cut in an upper and a lower part along a diagonal seam, plus a triangular gore set into the lower parts at the left side. The gore makes the hem asymmetric, dropping to its lowest point at the left side.

When To Wear

  • In spring and summer with a fitted top or a shirt tucked in.
  • Sewn in two or three related colours, so the panel seams read as colour blocks.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Fitted at the waist and hips with darts, flaring towards the hem.

Length: Uneven: shortest at the right side, longest at the left side where the gore sits.

Skirt: Upper front and upper back with darts pressed towards the centre; diagonal seams join them to the lower parts, pressed downwards; a single gore is stitched between the lower front and lower back at the left side.

Closure: Zip in the upper part of the left side seam, set under the folded edges; waistband with a buttonhole on the left end and a button on the right.

Waist: Straight interfaced waistband with an extension at the right back edge; inner edge topstitched from the right side into the attaching seam.

Finishing: Hem turned up and topstitched.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Joining angled seams, inserting a gore and matching the panel lines across the side seams, plus a side zip and a buttoned waistband.

Fabric Recommendations

Fine fabrics of natural or mixed fibres, for example gabardine in related colours.

Additional Supplies

  • 1 zip
  • 1 button
  • Fusible interfacing for the waistband

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
  • Upper back skirt half - 1 piece
  • Lower back skirt half - 1 piece
  • Upper front skirt half - 1 piece
  • Lower front skirt half - 1 piece
  • Gusset - 1 piece
  • Waistband - 1 piece
  • From fusible interfacing: interface the waistband piece.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Stitch darts on the upper skirt halves, press them towards the center.
  2. Stitch together the upper and lower skirt halves accordingly. Press seams downwards.
  3. Stitch the right side seam. Attach the gusset to the lower skirt halves. Press the seam allowances of the upper left side seam to the wrong side and attach the zipper underneath.
  4. Fold the waistband right sides together with the upper edge of the skirt and stitch, leaving a seam allowance for the fastener protruding on the right back edge of the waistband. Finish the ends of the waistband. Turn under the inner edges of the waistband and topstitch from the right side into the attachment seam. Make a buttonhole on the left end of the waistband, and sew a button on the right.
  5. Press the hem allowance to the wrong side, fold under and topstitch.
