Tech. Description

Embroidered Yoked Overlap Front Skirt

A women's straight knee-length skirt with a deep shaped yoke instead of a waistband and a front made of two panels, the right one overlapping the left along the centre front. A vertical band of embroidery runs down the overlapping edge.

When To Wear

  • To the office with a fitted blouse or a knit top tucked in.
  • With a jacket or cardigan for daytime events.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Straight, close to the body.

Length: Around the knee.

Waist: Front and back yokes cut on the fold, each with an interfaced inner yoke that faces the top edge; no waistband.

Front: Right and left panels with their centre edges turned under and topstitched; the right panel laps over the left on the centre line and the two are basted together at the top.

Closure: Zip in the left side seam; the inner yoke edges are turned under and sewn to the zip tape.

Back: One panel cut on the fold, plain, under the back yoke.

Finishing: Embroidery worked on the right front panel before final cutting: the panel is cut with larger seam allowances, the design is transferred with transfer paper and embroidered, then the pattern is laid on again and the panel recut to its exact shape. Hem turned under and topstitched.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Hand embroidery, a faced yoke, a side zip and an overlapped front.

Fabric Recommendations

Dense blended or natural fabrics; silk fabric is also suggested.

Additional Supplies

  • Fusible interfacing (inner yokes)
  • 1 zip
  • Transfer paper for the embroidery design

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
  • 1. Back skirt half - 1 piece on fold
  • 2. Front skirt half right - 1 piece on fold
  • 3. Front skirt half left - 1 piece on fold
  • 4. Back yoke - 1 piece on fold
  • 5. Front yoke - 1 piece on fold
  • From fusible interfacing: lower yoke pieces.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Embroidery: Cut the right front skirt half with slightly larger seam allowances. Using transfer paper, transfer the embroidery design onto the fabric and complete it. Place the pattern piece on the already embroidered piece and refine the cut.
  2. Reinforce the lower yoke pieces with fusible interfacing.
  3. Press the seam allowances of the center edges of the front skirt halves to the wrong side and topstitch. Overlap the right skirt half onto the left, aligning the center lines, and baste the upper edges.
  4. Stitch the lower edges of the yokes to the upper edges of the skirt halves, press the seam allowances towards the yokes.
  5. Stitch the right side seam of the skirt up to the slit notch. Stitch the left side seam of the skirt below the zipper notch, press the seam allowances open. Baste the zipper under the edges of the slit, then stitch from the right side.
  6. Stitch the side seams on the lower yokes.
  7. Face the top of the skirt with the lower yokes, turn them to the wrong side and press. Topstitch the open edges of the lower yokes into the seam attaching the upper yokes. Turn under the side edges of the lower yokes and sew them to the zipper tape.
  8. Turn under the hem allowance of the skirt bottom, topstitch.
