Elastic Waist Pyjama Trousers

Pattern #5236
Tech. Description

Elastic Waist Pyjama Trousers

A women's sewing pattern for comfortable pull-on pyjama trousers, featuring a relaxed straight-leg silhouette, exceptionally simple two-piece construction with no side seams, and a triple-channel elasticated waist.

When To Wear

These lightweight pyjama trousers are designed specifically for comfortable sleepwear and relaxed wear at home, making them an ideal choice for:

  • Sleepwear: Loose, comfortable pyjama trousers designed for restful nights in lightweight, breathable fabrics.
  • Loungewear: Perfect for relaxed evenings, leisurely mornings, and comfortable time at home.
  • Matching Pyjama Set: Ideal for coordinating with a matching pyjama top or jacket to create a complete sleepwear set.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Relaxed straight-leg pyjama trousers with generous ease through the hips and legs for unrestricted movement and comfortable sleepwear.

Construction: Exceptionally simple two-piece construction. Each complete trouser half is cut as a single piece incorporating both the front and back of one leg. This eliminates the conventional outer side seams and creates a clean, uninterrupted line along the outside of each leg.

Waist: The upper edge incorporates a cut-on waist facing that is folded to the inside and stitched to form three separate parallel elastic casings. Three individual lengths of elastic create a comfortable, softly gathered waist without a separate waistband piece.

Leg: Relaxed straight legs fall loosely from the hips to the hem. The absence of side seams creates a particularly clean and simple outer-leg line.

Closure: Easy pull-on construction with no zipper, fly, buttons, hooks or drawstring.

Hem: Finished with a simple turned and topstitched hem.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. A particularly straightforward pyjama-trouser pattern using only two main fabric pieces and no side seams. Construction involves stitching the inseams and center/crotch seam, forming the cut-on waist facing with three elastic casings, inserting the elastic, and finishing the hems.

Fabric Recommendations

Choose lightweight silk or cotton fabrics suitable for soft and comfortable sleepwear:

  • Lightweight silk fabrics
  • Cotton batiste
  • Lightweight cotton fabrics
  • Similar lightweight woven fabrics with a soft drape

Additional Supplies

  • Elastic tape for the waist – three lengths, each equal to the waist circumference

Cutter's Must

  • Trousers – 2 pieces

Sewing Instructions

  1. Stitch the inseams. Press the seam allowances open.
  2. Place one trouser half inside the other with right sides together. Stitch the center/crotch seam, leaving a section at the back unstitched above the fold line of the cut-on waist facing to allow the elastic to be inserted.
  3. Press the cut-on waist facing to the wrong side, turn under the seam allowance, and topstitch 0.1 cm from the fold. Stitch along the marked lines to form three separate parallel casings. Thread one length of elastic, equal to the waist circumference, through each of the three casings.
  4. Press the hem allowances to the wrong side, turn under the raw edges, and topstitch.
