Collared Princess Seam Dress

Pattern #5188
Tech. Description

Collared Princess Seam Dress

Introducing a sophisticated off-shoulder gown featuring a structured stand-up collar, elegant princess seams on the bodice, and a flowing, floor-length skirt with a dramatic side slit.

When To Wear

This elegant dress is designed for formal occasions where a distinguished and romantic aesthetic is desired:

  • Gala Events & Receptions: Perfect for making a memorable entrance at high-profile gatherings.
  • Weddings & Bridal Parties: An exquisite choice for guests, bridesmaids, or even a non-traditional bride.
  • Formal Dinners & Celebrations: Ideal for special occasions requiring elevated evening wear.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: A flattering fitted bodice transitioning into a full, floor-length A-line skirt.

Neckline & Collar: An elegant off-shoulder neckline framed by a wide, structured stand-up collar that extends around the upper bodice.

Bodice: Shaped with elegant princess seams for a tailored fit, featuring a distinct central panel from the neckline to the waist.

Sleeves: Sleeveless design, accentuated by the off-shoulder cut and collar.

Waist: Defined at the natural waistline, where the fitted bodice meets the voluminous skirt.

Skirt: A voluminous, floor-length skirt with a graceful drape, featuring a high side slit on the wearer's left for dramatic movement.

Closure: Concealed zipper closure at the center back of the bodice and skirt for a seamless finish.

Level Of Difficulty

Advanced. Requires confident tailoring skills, including intricate collar construction, princess seam shaping, full lining assembly, and concealed zipper insertion.

Fabric Recommendations

Choose elegant, well-draping fabrics that can hold the collar's structure while allowing the skirt to flow beautifully:

  • Crepe-satin
  • Well-draping fabrics from natural and blended fibers (e.g., satin, heavy silk blends)

Sewing Instructions

  1. Stitch darts on BACK PANEL pieces from main and LINING fabrics.
  2. Fold COLLAR pieces right sides together and stitch along the upper, front, lower, and inner (from NOTCH to back center seam) edges. Clip the SEAM ALLOWANCE near the NOTCH and turn the COLLAR right side out.
  3. Stitch the princess seams of the FRONT PANELs on the main fabric pieces, inserting the free lower edges of the COLLAR between them. Stitch the princess seams of the FRONT PANELs on the LINING fabric pieces.
  4. Stitch the side edges of the main and LINING fabric pieces.
  5. Fold the LINING with the main fabric right sides together and stitch along the upper edge. Fold back the LINING and topstitch it to the SEAM ALLOWANCE 1-2 mm from the seam line.
  6. Align the center seam of the COLLAR with the center back edge of the BACK PANEL to form a straight line and secure with a few stitches. Press the SEAM ALLOWANCES of the center back seam to the wrong side, place the ZIPPER underneath, and stitch in place.
  7. Stitch the side and center edges of the skirt pieces from main and LINING fabrics. Stitch the skirt from the main fabric to the BODICE from the main fabric; stitch the skirt from the LINING fabric to the BODICE from the LINING fabric. Press the SEAM ALLOWANCES open and stitch them together.
  8. Finish the bottom of the garment with a hemmed seam so that the LINING is 2 cm shorter than the main skirt. Secure the front seams near the NOTCH and the COLLAR corners with a few stitches.
