Back: cut in one piece on the fold, with vertical darts for subtle shaping.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Requires skills in sewing knit fabrics, collar and facing construction, binding the sleeve opening, and cuff assembly.

Fabric Recommendations

Choose lightweight knit fabrics that offer comfort and a good drape:

  • Shiny knit fabrics
  • Thin cotton knit fabrics
  • Silk knit fabrics

Additional Supplies

  • Fusible interfacing
  • 9 buttons
  • Shoulder pads

Attention! First, print the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90cm to 150cm) to determine how much material you will need (do not forget to account for paired and symmetrical pieces).

Fabric & Materials

You will need: shiny knit fabric, 140 cm wide – to determine the length of material needed for cutting, lay out the paper patterns on the fabric width and determine the required length; fusible interfacing; 9 buttons; shoulder pads. Material recommendations: shiny knit fabrics, thin cotton and silk knit fabrics.

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
  • Front – 2 pieces
  • Back – 1 piece on the fold
  • Collar – 2 pieces on the fold
  • Sleeve – 2 pieces
  • Cuff – 2 pieces
  • Sleeve Slit Facing – 2 pieces

Interfacing: reinforce the cut-on front facings and the cuffs with fusible interfacing. Fuse interfacing to only one Collar piece.

Sewing Instructions

  1. General recommendations: pieces cut from shiny knit fabric are stitched with a special stretch stitch or a narrow zigzag stitch.
  2. Stitch the darts.
  3. Stitch the side and shoulder seams.
  4. Turn up the hem allowance and topstitch.
  5. Stitch the two Collar pieces together along the outer edge, turn right side out and, holding the open edges together, baste the collar to the neckline.
  6. Fold the cut-on front facings to the right side and stitch them to the neckline over the collar. Between the ends of the facings, stitch the collar to the back neckline.
  7. Turn the facings to the wrong side and slipstitch them to the hem and to the seam allowances.
  8. Sleeves with cuffs: cut the opening on each Sleeve. Spread the opening into a straight line. Place the Sleeve Slit Facing (bias binding) on the sleeve, right sides together, and stitch along its long edge as close as possible to the edge of the opening. Press the binding over the seam, wrap it around the edge to the wrong side, turn under and slipstitch over the seam; the binding is 0.5 cm wide. On the wrong side of the sleeve, stitch both halves of the binding together diagonally at the top of the opening. Turn the binding of the front edge of the opening to the wrong side and baste it to the lower edge of the sleeve.
  9. Stitch the sleeve seam. Fold and baste a pleat at the lower edge of the sleeve.
  10. Fold the Cuff in half lengthwise, right sides together, and stitch the short ends; turn right side out. Stitch the outer half of the cuff to the lower edge of the sleeve, turn under the inner half and slipstitch over the seam.
  11. Set in the sleeves, easing the caps and catching a bias strip of lining fabric in the cap area. Press the seam allowances in the cap area towards the sleeve, and the bias strip towards the front and back.
  12. Sew in the shoulder pads.
  13. Make 5 buttonholes along the right front edge and 2 buttonholes on each cuff. Sew on the buttons.
