Bohemian Shirred-Waist Blouse

Introducing a women's sewing pattern for a charming blouse featuring a bound V-neckline, an overlapping front with three small buttons, and an elastic-gathered front waist with a softly flared lower edge.

When To Wear

This Bohemian Shirred-Waist Blouse is designed for versatile wear, making it an ideal choice for:

  • Light & Breezy Days: Its comfortable fit and airy fabric make it perfect for warm weather and relaxed gatherings.
  • Everyday Chic: Easily styled for daily wear or elevated for semi-casual events with its distinctive details.
  • Vacation & Resort Wear: The relaxed silhouette is ideal for holiday wardrobes and sunny destinations.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: a comfortable yet flattering silhouette, shaped with darts and gathered at the front waist, with a gently flared lower edge.

Neckline: a deep V-neckline, finished with a double-fold bias binding for a clean edge.

Closure: the right front overlaps the left front along the center front line; three small buttons sit at the waist, and the fronts are stitched together over the elastic.

Sleeves: set-in sleeves with eased caps, ending in a ruffled flounce.

Waist: a 12 cm piece of narrow elastic stitched under the fronts gathers the center front waist.

Back: a center back seam.

Hem: a gently curved hemline, turned under and topstitched.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Involves techniques such as sewing darts, bias binding a V-neckline, attaching elastic, making buttonholes, and setting in sleeves with easing.

Fabric Recommendations

Choose light, sheer woven fabrics with good drape for a flowing silhouette:

  • Printed viscose crepe-georgette
  • Other light, sheer blouse fabrics

Additional Supplies

  • 3 mm wide elastic tape
  • 3 small buttons

Attention! First, print the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can range from 90cm to 150cm) to determine how much material you will need (don't forget to account for paired and symmetrical pieces).

Fabric & Materials

You will need: printed viscose crepe-georgette, 140 cm wide – to determine the length of material needed, lay out the paper patterns on the fabric width and measure the required length; elastic tape, 3 mm wide; 3 small buttons. Material recommendations: light, sheer blouse fabrics.

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
  • Front – 2 pieces
  • Back – 2 pieces
  • Sleeve Flounce – 2 pieces
  • Sleeve – 2 pieces
  • Additionally: a bias strip for binding the neckline, 1.00 m long and 4.5 cm wide, including seam allowances.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Stitch the center back seam.
  2. Stitch the darts.
  3. Stitch the side and shoulder seams.
  4. Turn the cut-on front facings to the wrong side along the fold lines. Press the edges. Baste the facings to the neckline edge, sewing basting stitches through the fronts along the marked neckline.
  5. Bind the neckline. Trim the seam allowances along the neckline edge. Fold the bias strip in half lengthwise and press. Pin the folded strip to the neckline edge and stitch 0.75 cm from the edge. Press the binding upwards and turn under its ends. Wrap the binding around the seam allowances to the wrong side, baste just above the seam, and stitch in the ditch of the seam from the right side of the blouse.
  6. Stitch the short edges of each Sleeve Flounce. Finish the lower edge of the flounce with zigzag: press the edge allowance to the wrong side, sew a dense, short zigzag along the fold from the right side, and trim the excess allowance close to the stitching on the wrong side.
  7. Stitch the sleeve seams.
  8. Place each flounce on its sleeve, right sides together, and stitch to the lower edge of the sleeve. Press the seam allowances towards the sleeve and serge them together.
  9. Set in the sleeves, easing the sleeve caps.
  10. Press the hem allowance of the blouse to the wrong side, turn under and topstitch 0.75 cm from the edge.
  11. Make the buttonholes on the right front. Lap the front edge of the right front over the left front, matching the center front lines, and pin. Following the markings, stitch a 12 cm length of elastic under the fronts, stretching it as you sew, and stitch the front edge of the right front to the left front.
