Six-Gored Skirt

Introducing a sophisticated women's sewing pattern for a six-gored skirt, designed with a flattering a-line silhouette and a classic waistband.

When To Wear

This versatile skirt offers timeless elegance suitable for various occasions, including:

  • Professional Settings: Its polished silhouette makes it ideal for office and business environments.
  • Everyday Chic: Perfect for a refined casual look or stylish daily wear.
  • Semi-Formal Gatherings: Easily dressed up for brunches, dinners, or cultural events.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: a flattering a-line silhouette, shaped by six vertical gores for gentle flare and graceful movement.

Waist: Features a clean, interfaced straight waistband designed to sit at the natural waist.

Construction: Composed of six individual panels (gores) that create a smooth fit through the hip and a gradual flare towards the hem.

Closure: Concealed zipper closure at the left side seam, secured with a button on the waistband.

Hem: Finishes at a versatile knee length with a neat, double-turned topstitched hem.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Requires accurate seam construction, waistband application, and zipper insertion.

Fabric Recommendations

Opt for light fabrics with good drape to best highlight the gored construction:

  • Crepe satin
  • Lightweight natural fiber fabrics
  • Lightweight blended fiber fabrics

Additional Supplies

  • 1 zipper
  • 1 button
  • Fusible interfacing for the waistband

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
  • Skirt Gore – 6 pieces
  • Waistband – 1 piece
  • From fusible interfacing:
  • Waistband – 1 piece

Sewing Instructions

  1. Fuse interfacing to the Waistband.
  2. Stitch all seams joining the Skirt Gores, leaving the zipper opening unstitched in the left side seam. Overlock the seam allowances together (except the left side seam: overlock separately and press open).
  3. Insert the zipper as a concealed zipper, so that the teeth are not visible.
  4. Attach the Waistband to the skirt, leaving the underlap extension of the Waistband projecting beyond the right edge of the zipper opening. Press the attachment seam allowances and the free long edge of the Waistband towards the Waistband. Fold the Waistband in half lengthwise, right sides together, and stitch the short ends and the underlap edges. Turn the Waistband right side out and topstitch the inner edge in the ditch of the attachment seam.
  5. Press the hem allowance to the wrong side, turn the raw edge under to a width of 1 cm and topstitch.
  6. Make a buttonhole on the Waistband and sew on the button.
