V-Neck Sleeveless Gathered Bubble Dress

Pattern #4107
Tech. Description

Gathered Bubble Dress

A party-ready women's sewing pattern featuring a flattering V-neck bodice and a dramatically voluminous bubble-hem skirt, designed for celebratory elegance.

When To Wear

This dress is designed for festive and special occasions, making it an ideal choice for:

  • Festive Celebrations: Perfect for parties, cocktail events, or special occasions requiring a statement dress.
  • Evening Events: Its elegant silhouette and luxurious fabric lend themselves beautifully to evening gatherings.
  • Fashion Statements: The unique bubble hem and flattering cut make it ideal for creative styling and photo shoots.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: a fitted V-neck bodice with a waist seam transitions into a dramatically voluminous, gathered bubble skirt, creating a playful yet elegant profile.

Neckline: A graceful V-neckline at the front and a high rounded neckline at the back, offering a flattering frame for the décolletage and shoulders.

Bodice: Sleeveless, fully lined, with a centre front seam and pleats at the waist of the front bodice; the back bodice is shaped with princess seams.

Waist: a defined waistline is accented by a tie-back belt that emerges from the side seams, allowing for adjustable cinching and a touch of charm.

Skirt: The pleated skirt is gathered at the hem onto a shorter lining and then tacked to the lining at several points to form soft draped puffs, creating its unique voluminous silhouette.

Back: the back has a centre back seam with a concealed invisible zipper, complemented by the tie-back belt.

Length: Finishes at a chic knee-length, balancing the skirt's volume with a sophisticated proportion.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Involves precise gathering, lining construction, setting an invisible zipper, and draping the bubble skirt on a dress form.

Fabric Recommendations

Choose fabrics with body and a slight sheen that support the voluminous skirt, such as:

  • Silk fabrics made from natural or blended fibers

Additional Supplies

  • Lining fabric
  • Invisible zipper

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, they include seam allowances. If the contour is single, the patterns do not include seam allowances. Seam allowances: All seams 1 cm. Attention! First, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90 cm to 150 cm) to determine how much material you will need. When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match! Attention! Markings on the patterns are given on the right side. Attention! The lining pieces for the upper front and upper back are cut using the main fabric patterns.

  • From main fabric:
    • Upper Front – 2 pieces
    • Center Back – 2 pieces
    • Side Back – 2 pieces
    • Lower Front – 1 piece on fold
    • Lower Back – 2 pieces
    • Waistband (tie belt) – 2 pieces
  • From lining fabric:
    • Lower Front Lining – 1 piece on fold
    • Lower Back Lining – 2 pieces
    • Upper Front (cut from the main pattern) – 2 pieces
    • Center Back (cut from the main pattern) – 2 pieces
    • Side Back (cut from the main pattern) – 2 pieces

Sewing Instructions

  1. Fold each Waistband (tie belt) piece lengthwise in half, right sides together, and stitch along the long side and one short side. Turn right side out and press.
  2. Mark and stitch the pleats on the Upper Front. Stitch the center front seam and press the seam allowances. Lay the pleats on the Lower Front. Stitch the Upper Front to the Lower Front. Press the seam allowances upwards.
  3. Stitch the Center Back to the Side Back (princess seams). Press the seam allowances towards the center. Lay the pleats on the Lower Back. Stitch the upper back to the Lower Back. Press the seam allowances upwards.
  4. Stitch the side and shoulder seams of the outer dress, inserting the open ends of the ties into the side seams. Press the seam allowances towards the back. Stitch the center back seam from the mark downwards. Press the seam allowances open.
  5. On the Upper Front lining, lay the pleats according to the markings and baste them along the lower edge. Assemble the lining in the same way as the outer dress, leaving an opening in the left side seam for turning.
  6. Insert the invisible zipper into the center back seam.
  7. Place the dress with the lining right sides together, aligning the neckline edges. Stopping 5 mm short of the zipper edges, fold the lining back and pin it to the upper edge of the dress. Fold the center back seam allowances along the zipper towards the right side of the dress and pin them to the neckline edge over the lining. Stitch the neckline. Clip the seam allowances at the curves, turn right side out and press. Topstitch the seam allowances to the lining. Attach the lining to the zipper tape.
  8. Stitch the armholes to the lining in two steps: first the front armhole, then the back armhole. Clip the seam allowances at the curves and turn right side out.
  9. Run a long, loose-tension stitch along the lower edge of the outer skirt and gather it. Stitch the outer skirt hem to the lining hem. Turn the dress through the opening in the side seam and close the opening. Secure the outer dress to the lining with hand stitches along the waistline.
  10. Put the dress on a mannequin or figure and pin the outer skirt to the lining, forming the puffs. Bar-tack with a short machine stitch at the pin locations. Tie the belt at the back.
