Jersey Top with Front Gathers

Discover a chic made-to-measure knit top pattern featuring an elegant V-neck, flattering front gathers and a decorative horizontal placket (tab) gathering them at the center front.

  • Casual Chic: Perfect for stylish everyday wear, pairing effortlessly with jeans or skirts.
  • Work Attire: a comfortable yet polished choice for office environments, especially when layered.
  • Evening Out: The sophisticated draping makes it suitable for dressier casual outings or dinner.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: a relaxed, contemporary top with an elegant draped front and short cut-on sleeves.

Neckline: Features a V-neckline framed by a folded collar band.

Front Draping: The front is distinguished by gathers at the shoulders and side fronts, drawn in at the center by a horizontal placket (tab) and elastic-thread shirring, creating beautiful, soft folds across the bust and waist.

Sleeves: Short cut-on sleeves offer comfort and a relaxed yet refined line.

Back: a clean back with a center seam provides a contrasting simplicity to the intricate front.

Length: Designed to hit at the hip, offering versatility for tucking in or wearing untucked.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. This pattern requires experience with knit fabrics, creating gathers, attaching a placket, and working with elastic thread.

Fabric Recommendations

For best results, choose thin, well-draping knit fabrics with a medium degree of stretch:

  • Knit fabrics made from natural or blended fibers

Additional Supplies

  • Elastic thread

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, seam allowances are included. If the contour is single, the patterns do not include seam allowances. Seam allowances: hem allowance and sleeve hem allowance – 1.5 cm, other seams 0.8 cm. Attention! First, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90 cm to 150 cm) to determine how much material you will need.

  • From main fabric:
    • Back – 2 pieces
    • Center Front – 2 pieces
    • Side Front – 2 pieces
    • Collar – 1 piece
    • Placket – 1 piece

Tip: Cut pieces from knit fabrics are stitched with a special elastic or narrow zigzag stitch. The hem allowance is topstitched with a twin needle to maintain elasticity. You can also stitch pieces directly on a 3- or 4-thread overlock machine.

Sewing Instructions

When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match!

  1. Along edge 3 of the Side Front, sew a row of long, loose stitches and gather. Stitch edges 1 and 2 of the Side Front together. Align the resulting vertical sections (do not stitch them).
  2. On the Center Front, mark and cut open the dart, leaving seam allowances of 0.5 - 0.7 cm. Stitch the dart. Stitch the Center Front to the Side Front along the princess seam. Press the seam.
  3. Along the front shoulder edge, from the mark to the center seam, sew a row of long, loose stitches and gather. Stitch the center back seam, then the side and shoulder seams.
  4. Fold the Collar in half lengthwise, wrong sides together, and attach it to the neckline. Start and end the stitching at the mark of the center front seam. Stitch the center front seam from the mark to the bottom.
  5. Fold the Placket in half lengthwise, right sides together, and stitch the long edge. Turn the Placket right side out and press, centering the seam on its underside.
  6. Along the slits on the front, sew a row of stitching with elastic thread, stitching between the openings. Insert the Placket into the openings and stitch it in place.
  7. Overlock, fold, and topstitch the bottom edge and armhole edges.
