Balloon Sleeve Blouse

Introducing a women's sewing pattern for a chic, relaxed-fit blouse distinguished by its voluminous balloon sleeves and subtle back detail.

When To Wear

  • Casual Everyday: Pair with jeans or skirts for an effortlessly stylish look.
  • Work & Office: a comfortable yet polished option when styled with tailored trousers or a pencil skirt.
  • Transitional Seasons: The airy fabric and sleeve length make it perfect for spring and autumn layering.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: a relaxed, slightly cropped silhouette that offers comfortable drape and modern appeal.

Neckline: a classic round neckline providing a clean and versatile finish.

Sleeves: Voluminous balloon sleeves cut in two parts (front and back sleeve joined along the top), gathered into the armhole at the cap and drawn in at the hem with an elastic casing.

Back: A faced slit opening at the back neck, fastened with one button and a rouleau loop.

Hem: a straight hemline that hits at a flattering cropped length, ideal for pairing with high-waisted bottoms.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Requires skills in gathering fabric, setting sleeves, making a rouleau button loop and a faced back slit, and forming an elastic casing.

Fabric Recommendations

Choose light to medium-weight blouse fabrics with good drape:

  • Blouse fabrics made from natural or blended fibers

Additional Supplies

  • Fusible interfacing
  • Elastic tape, 1 cm wide
  • 1 button

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, the patterns include seam allowances. If the contour is single, the patterns do not include seam allowances. Seam allowances: All seams 1 cm. Hem allowance for the garment bottom and sleeve – 2.0 cm. Attention! First of all, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90 cm to 150 cm) to determine how much material you will need (don't forget to account for paired and symmetrical pieces).

  • From main fabric:
    • Back – 1 piece on fold
    • Back Sleeve – 2 pieces
    • Front – 1 piece on fold
    • Front Sleeve – 2 pieces
    • Front Neckline Facing – 1 piece
    • Back Neckline Facing – 1 piece
    • Bias strip for the button loop, 2.5 cm × 10 cm (cut by measurement) – 1 piece
  • From fusible interfacing:
    • Front Neckline Facing – 1 piece
    • Back Neckline Facing – 1 piece

Sewing Instructions

When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match!

  1. Fuse interfacing to the designated pieces.
  2. Stitch shoulder seams. Overlock allowances and press towards the back.
  3. Stitch the Front Sleeve to the Back Sleeve along the upper sleeve seam. Along the sleeve cap between the marks, sew a line of stitching with loosened upper thread tension and gather. Set sleeves into armholes. Overlock allowances and press.
  4. Stitch side seams simultaneously with sleeve seams. Overlock allowance and press towards the back.
  5. Cut a bias strip 2.5 cm wide and 10 cm long for the loop. Fold the strip in half lengthwise, right sides together, and stitch 0.3 cm from the fold. Trim allowances close to the stitching, turn the strip right side out, and straighten the rouleau. Adjust the loop length.
  6. Stitch the shoulder seams of the Front and Back Neckline Facings. Press allowances open. Overlock the outer edge. Place the facing on the garment right sides together and baste along the neckline. Cut the slit through the back and the back facing along the marking. Stitch around the neckline and the back slit, tapering to nothing at the slit point and catching in the loop. Clip allowances and the corner, turn the facing to the wrong side, and press.
  7. Fold the sleeve hem allowance inwards by 1 cm, then another 1 cm, and stitch, forming a casing and leaving an opening. Thread elastic tape through the casing and secure the ends.
  8. Overlock the hem allowance of the garment bottom, press to the wrong side, and stitch.
  9. Sew on the button.
