Tech. Description

High Waisted A-Line Midi Skirt with Decorative Flaps

Introducing a women's sewing pattern for an elegant high-waisted a-line midi skirt, distinguished by its unique decorative front flap details and clean silhouette.

When To Wear

This sophisticated skirt is a versatile choice for a range of settings, making it ideal for:

  • Office & Business Wear: a polished and professional staple for the workplace.
  • Smart Casual Outings: Perfect for stylish daytime events, luncheons, or relaxed social gatherings.
  • Elegant Evening Gatherings: Easily dressed up with the right top and accessories for sophisticated evenings.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: a gracefully flared a-line silhouette, falling to a refined midi length.

Waist: a high waist without a waistband, shaped with darts and finished on the inside with facings.

Front Details: Two decorative flaps at the upper sides of the skirt, and a centre front overlap: the right front panel lies over the left and is topstitched in a mock-fly shape at the top, opening as a front split below.

Closure: Invisible zipper in the center back seam (the front topstitched placket is decorative, not an opening).

Hem: a neat, even hem finishes the skirt at a sophisticated midi length, offering classic appeal.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Requires familiarity with constructing darts, inserting an invisible zipper, assembling the front overlap with its cut-on placket, and finishing the waist with facings.

Fabric Recommendations

Choose medium-weight suiting fabrics with good drape and body to achieve the intended silhouette:

  • Suiting fabrics made from natural or blended fibers

Additional Supplies

  • Fusible interfacing
  • Invisible zipper

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, seam allowances are included. If the contour is single, seam allowances are not included. Seam allowances: all seams 1 cm. Hem allowance – 3 cm. Attention! First of all, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90 cm to 150 cm) to determine how much material you will need. When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match! Attention! Markings on the patterns are made on the right side.

  • From main fabric:
    • Back Skirt – 2 pieces
    • Right Front Panel – 1 piece
    • Left Front Skirt – 1 piece
    • Back Facing – 2 pieces
    • Front Facing – 1 piece
    • Flap – 2 pieces
  • From fusible interfacing:
    • Back Facing – 2 pieces
    • Front Facing – 1 piece
    • Flap – 2 pieces

Sewing Instructions

  1. Fuse interfacing to the designated pieces.
  2. Stitch the darts on the Back Skirt pieces, press the dart folds towards the center.
  3. Serge the center back edges separately. Stitch the center back seam from the zipper mark to the hem, press allowances open. Insert the invisible zipper.
  4. Stitch the darts on the Right Front Panel and Left Front Skirt, press the dart folds towards the center.
  5. Clip the allowance of the center front edge of the Left Front Skirt at the mark. Serge both sections: from the top to the mark and from the mark to the hem. Press the allowance from the mark to the hem to the wrong side and topstitch. Serge the center front edge of the Right Front Panel. Press its cut-on placket to the wrong side. Lay the Right Front Panel over the Left Front Skirt, matching the center lines, and topstitch along the markings.
  6. Stitch the side seams, press allowances towards the back and serge.
  7. Fold each Flap in half lengthwise, right sides together, and stitch the short sides. Trim allowances at corners, turn flaps right side out, straighten, and press. Serge the upper edge. Place the flap on the garment according to the markings and stitch (serged edge facing down). Fold the flap down and topstitch to the main piece along the stitching line.
  8. Stitch the side seams of the Front Facing and Back Facings, press allowances open, serge the lower edge. Place the facing on the upper edge of the skirt right sides together and stitch along the top. Clip allowances, turn the facing to the wrong side and press. Tack it to the side seams and to the zipper tape.
  9. Serge the bottom edge of the garment, press to the wrong side and hem with blind stitches. Blind-stitch the allowance of the center front edge of the Right Front Panel.
