Tech. Description

Pleated Front A-line Skirt

Introducing a women's sewing pattern for a sophisticated a-line skirt, featuring a wide shaped waist yoke, inverted pleats, and a decorative buttoned placket down the front.

When To Wear

This versatile a-line skirt is perfect for a range of occasions, offering both comfort and elegance, making it ideal for:

  • Professional & Office Wear: a polished choice for work, meetings, or business casual environments.
  • Smart Casual Outings: Ideal for brunches, cultural events, or stylish daytime gatherings.
  • Transitional Season Styling: Pairs beautifully with various tops for sophisticated looks in spring, autumn, or mild winters.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: a flattering a-line silhouette, falling gracefully to a midi length.

Waist: A wide, shaped, interfaced yoke instead of a waistband, finished on the inside with a second yoke layer.

Front: A topstitched center front placket with decorative buttons (not an opening), continuing onto the yoke, and inverted pleats that add fullness and movement; the back skirt also has inverted pleats.

Closure: Invisible zipper in the center back seam.

Hem: a classic midi length that offers refined coverage and versatility.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Involves techniques such as constructing inverted pleats, inserting an invisible zipper, and attaching a lined shaped yoke and a topstitched decorative placket.

Fabric Recommendations

Select soft, thin suiting fabrics with good drape and body to highlight the pleats and silhouette:

  • Thin, soft suiting fabrics made from natural or blended fibers

Additional Supplies

  • Fusible interfacing
  • Invisible zipper
  • 8 decorative buttons

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, seam allowances are included. If the contour is single, the patterns do not include seam allowances. Seam allowances: all seams – 1 cm, hem allowance – 2 cm. Attention! First, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90 cm to 150 cm) to determine how much material you will need.

  • From main fabric:
    • Back Skirt – 2 pieces
    • Front Skirt – 1 piece on fold
    • Front Yoke – 2 pieces
    • Back Yoke – 4 pieces
    • Placket – 1 piece
  • From fusible interfacing:
    • Back Yoke – 2 pieces
    • Front Yoke – 1 piece

Sewing Instructions

When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match!

  1. Fuse interfacing to the designated pieces.
  2. Fold and baste the inverted pleats on the Back Skirt. Stitch the outer Back Yoke to the Back Skirt, press seam allowances upwards.
  3. Serge the center back edges separately. Stitch the center back seam from the zipper mark to the hem. Press seam allowances open. Insert the invisible zipper.
  4. Fold and baste the inverted pleats on the Front Skirt. Press the long edges of the Placket to the wrong side. Place the placket on the skirt and topstitch along the markings. Stitch the outer Front Yoke to the Front Skirt, press seam allowances upwards.
  5. Stitch the side seams, press seam allowances towards the back and serge.
  6. Stitch the side seams of the inner yokes (Front Yoke and Back Yokes), press seam allowances open. Serge the lower edge. Place the inner yoke on the skirt right sides together and stitch along the top edge. Understitch the allowances onto the inner yoke 0.2 cm from the seam. Turn the inner yoke to the wrong side and press. Turn under the center back edges and hand-sew them to the zipper tape. Stitch in the ditch of the outer yoke seam to secure the inner yoke.
  7. Serge the bottom edge of the garment, press to the wrong side and topstitch.
  8. Sew decorative buttons onto the placket and front yoke.
