Fabric Recommendations

Choose classic suiting materials that offer good drape and structure:

  • Semi-woolen suiting fabrics

Additional Supplies

  • 70 cm cotton lining fabric (90 cm wide)
  • 60 cm fusible interfacing (140 cm wide)
  • 1 m bias tape (1.5 cm wide), either self-made from lining fabric or pre-made with fixed edges
  • 1 zipper (20 cm length)
  • 1 button (15 mm diameter)
  • 1 metal hook and bar closure for trousers

Sewing Instructions

  1. Reinforce the belt pieces with fusible interfacing (Heat-adhesive interfacings are pressed onto the wrong side of the piece with a strongly heated iron).
  2. Place the pocket opening facing and side wrong side onto the right side of the front pocket bag according to the corresponding markings, baste along the edges and stitch with a frequent small zigzag along the lower contours.
  3. On each side, create a "Pocket in the side seam" - Stitch the pocket bags to the front and back parts of the garment according to the markings and press the seam allowances towards the pocket bags.
  4. Align the edges and stitch the side seams and the pocket contour.
  5. From the right side, lay a 0.5 cm securing stitch along the pocket opening of the front.
  6. Overlock the seam allowances; baste the pocket bag to the waist edge.
  7. Stitch the darts of the back and press them towards the sides.
  8. On each back, create a "Welt pocket with two facings" - Press the facings in half lengthwise, right side in.
  9. Pin the facings, turned in opposite directions, onto the right side of the main garment according to the markings.
  10. Place the pocket bag from lining fabric onto the lower facing, place the pocket bag from main fabric onto the upper facing and stitch at a distance of 5 mm on both sides of the markings.
  11. Cut the fabric in the center between the stitches, tapering to a point at the ends of the stitches, turn the pocket bags to the wrong side and fold the facings by 1 cm.
  12. Topstitch the free edges of the facings onto the pocket bags with a zigzag stitch.
  13. Fold both pocket bags, align and stitch along the contour.
  14. From the wrong side, stitch the ends of the facing onto the triangles of the main fabric; baste the pocket bag edges to the waist edge.
  15. Stitch the side and inseam seams.
  16. Stitch the center seam of the front up to the fastener.
  17. Face the right underlap, turn out and press.
  18. Create a "zipper with an attached flap" - Place the left underlap onto the corresponding fastener edge, right sides together, and stitch along the edge.
  19. Press the seam allowances towards the underlap and lay a securing stitch; press the underlap to the wrong side of the garment.
  20. Pin the zipper, turned sideways, to the right fastener edge, place the underlap folded in half wrong side in on top, aligning the edges, and stitch all layers; straighten the underlap and lay a securing stitch along the edge of the zipper.
  21. Stitch the second side of the zipper to the left underlap.
  22. Overlock the seam allowances and stitch the left underlap to the main garment.
  23. From the wrong side, lay a securing zigzag stitch along the lower edges of the underlaps.
  24. Face the belt loop piece, turn out, press and divide into 6 parts.
  25. Pin the belt loops, turned downwards, to the waist edge according to the markings.
  26. Face the 4 cm extension under the fastener on the left belt and stitch the end of the right belt.
  27. Stitch each belt piece on one side to the corresponding sections of the waist edge.
  28. Face the edge of the inner side of the belt with bias binding.
  29. Stitch the center seam of the back and the belt.
  30. Fold the belt and hand-stitch the inner side of the belt with a blind stitch.
  31. Fold the belt loops upwards, fold under the edges and stitch onto the belt.
  32. Overlock the hem, press inwards and hand-stitch with a blind stitch.
  33. Work a buttonhole on the left end of the belt and sew on a button.
  34. Install a hook at the base of the zipper tape.
